Why Winter Is Hard on Asphalt
Asphalt is flexible, but it is not waterproof. Over time, sun exposure, vehicle traffic, oil drips, and natural aging dry out the surface. Fine cracks begin to form. Once moisture gets through those cracks, the base material below the asphalt can soften, shift, or wash away.
A warm afternoon followed by an overnight freeze is especially tough on older driveways. Water expands when it freezes, widening existing cracks and lifting weakened sections of pavement. Narrow surface cracks may be good candidates for crack filling, while wider cracks with broken edges may require cleaning, preparation, and more extensive repair. Likewise, a pothole caused by a single weak spot is different from repeated potholes in a low, poorly drained section.
Be careful with DIY sealers and patch products when temperatures are marginal. The product label may list a minimum temperature, but surface temperature, overnight conditions, moisture, and preparation all affect the result. A driveway that looks dry can still hold moisture in cracks or shaded areas.
It is also worth protecting the edges. Do not pile heavy materials on them, allow vehicles to run off the side, or leave landscaping soil piled against the pavement. Keeping the edge supported and clear helps slow cracking and breakup.
