A puddle at the bottom of a driveway may look harmless after a storm. Left in place, it can soften the base beneath asphalt, widen cracks during winter freeze-thaw cycles, stain concrete, and send water toward the garage or foundation. The best driveway drainage solutions deal with the water’s path, not just the puddle you can see.

For homeowners across the Greater Toronto Area, drainage is often tied to driveway maintenance. Heavy rain, spring thaw, compacted soil, aging asphalt, and neighboring grades can all send water to the wrong place. The right fix depends on where the water starts, where it collects, and where it can safely go.

Start by Finding the Source of the Water

Before installing a drain, watch the driveway during a steady rainfall or use a hose to trace the flow. Water should move away from the house, garage, and adjoining walkways. A driveway does not need a dramatic slope, but it does need a consistent route for runoff.

Look for water that sits in the same place for more than a day, washes gravel or soil across the pavement, runs beneath a garage door, or forms a dark, damp line along the edge of the driveway. These signs point to more than a surface-level issue. They may indicate a low spot, failed grading, blocked drainage, or a base that has settled over time.

Also check the roofline. Downspouts that discharge onto a driveway can overwhelm an otherwise sound drainage layout. Redirecting roof runoff is sometimes the simplest first step, especially when the puddling happens directly below a downspout.

Best Driveway Drainage Solutions for Common Problems

There is no single drainage product that suits every property. A narrow urban driveway with a garage at the bottom needs a different approach than a long sloped driveway on a larger lot. These are the most practical options and where each one makes sense.

Regrading for poor slope

Regrading is often the best answer when water moves toward the home because the driveway, surrounding soil, or both have settled. The goal is to reshape the surface so water naturally runs toward a safe outlet.

For asphalt, this can involve removing and rebuilding a low section rather than simply applying another layer over the top. Paving over a depression may improve the appearance briefly, but the low spot often returns if the base is weak. Around the driveway edges, soil grading may also need adjustment to keep runoff from returning to the pavement.

Regrading is a more involved repair, but it is usually worth considering when the drainage problem affects a large area or threatens the garage and foundation.

Trench drains at the garage entrance

A trench drain, also called a channel drain, is a long, narrow drain installed across the driveway. It is especially useful where a driveway slopes down toward a garage, basement walkout, or building entrance.

Water enters through a grated top and is carried through a pipe to an approved discharge area. The grate must be rated for vehicle traffic, installed at the correct height, and kept free of leaves, sand, and winter debris. A trench drain can be very effective, but it should not be used to cover up a major grading failure. If the system receives more water than it was designed to handle, it can back up when you need it most.

Catch basins for concentrated runoff

A catch basin is a box-like inlet placed at a low point where water naturally gathers. It can collect runoff from a driveway, patio, or landscape area and direct it through buried piping.

This option works well when there is one clear collection point, such as the bottom corner of a driveway. It is less suitable for shallow, widespread puddling across a broad surface. Catch basins also need occasional cleaning because sediment, leaves, and grit settle inside. A clogged basin is no better than no basin at all.

Swales and drainage along driveway edges

A swale is a shallow, shaped channel in the landscape that guides water away without requiring a visible metal grate. It can be a good fit for properties with enough side-yard space and a natural downhill route away from the home.

The benefit is simple, low-profile drainage that blends into the property. The trade-off is that swales need room and careful grading. They are not usually practical between closely spaced homes or beside a fully hardscaped driveway. In those cases, an edge drain or catch basin may be more realistic.

Permeable surfaces for lighter runoff

Permeable pavers and some permeable pavement systems allow water to pass through joints or the surface into a prepared stone base below. They can reduce runoff and work well for patios, walkways, and certain driveways.

They are not a quick fix for an existing failing asphalt driveway. Proper excavation, base preparation, and an appropriate subsoil condition are necessary for the system to perform. In areas with clay-heavy soil or a high water table, additional drainage design may still be required. Permeable surfaces can be a strong long-term option, but the installation needs to be planned from the ground up.

French drains for water beside the driveway

A French drain uses perforated pipe surrounded by clean stone to collect water moving through the soil. It is most useful beside a driveway where wet ground, runoff from higher land, or water seeping from a lawn is undermining the pavement edge.

French drains are not intended to handle large sheets of water racing down a driveway surface. They manage subsurface moisture and moderate runoff. When the edge of asphalt is crumbling or sinking because the surrounding ground stays saturated, this type of system can help protect the driveway base.

Match the Fix to the Surface

Drainage work should protect the driveway rather than create new weak points. On asphalt, standing water speeds up oxidation and gives water more time to enter cracks. Crack filling and sealing are worthwhile maintenance steps, but they cannot correct a low area that holds water every time it rains.

Concrete driveways can also suffer when water sits at joints, settles along the edges, or freezes repeatedly in surface flaws. Interlock driveways need special attention because water can wash jointing sand away and shift pavers if the base or edge restraint is compromised.

For this reason, drainage repairs and surface repairs should be coordinated. A contractor may need to correct the water route first, then repair cracks, potholes, settled areas, or loose pavers once the area has a chance to dry and stabilize. Do Not Send Water Somewhere Else by Mistake

A drainage system must send water to a safe, permitted location. Directing runoff onto a neighbor’s property, across a public sidewalk, or toward a foundation can create a larger problem than the original puddle. Local rules, lot grading, and stormwater connections matter, particularly on tightly spaced GTA properties.

Buried pipe work also deserves care. Before digging, underground utilities must be identified, and drainage outlets need to remain accessible for inspection and cleaning. If a system depends on a pump, it should be treated as a maintenance item, not a set-it-and-forget-it installation. Power outages, pump failure, and debris can all affect performance.

Keep the System Working Through the Seasons

Even a well-designed drainage system needs basic upkeep. Clear leaves from trench drain grates and catch basins in spring and fall. Check that downspout extensions are secure after winter. Watch for new settlement around driveway edges, especially after heavy rain or snowmelt.

If water begins pooling where it did not before, act early. Small cracks, minor edge erosion, and shallow depressions are easier to address before water reaches the driveway base. Preventive surface care can extend the life of asphalt, concrete, and interlock, but proper drainage gives that maintenance a chance to work.
